Cell Phone Number Listings

Posted on August 10, 2011

I applied for a court clerk job from a confidential job ad on theemploymentplanet.com. Is it a scam?

The application asked for my cell phone number and wireless provider for the option to text any update about the position but I thought the court clerk job description sounded legit.

But I’m just not sure. I mean, what’s up with confidential job listings anyway? Plus, the site advisor is grey. I originally found the ad on yahoo hotjobs but you have to apply to the website.
This is the link: http://theemploymentplanet.com/joboffer/register.cfm?jobpositionid=21049

And if it is a scam, what should I do because I already sent the application out?

I can tell you from my experience what’s up with “confidential” job listings. First reason: sometimes companies post as confidential, when they want to replace employees for cheaper ones or to replace a bad one. They don’t want to run the risk that their workers will run into the ad, so they post as “confidential”. A second reason they do this is because some companies have bad reputations for high employee turn over, so they want to attract as many applications as possible, so they won’t tell you the company name so that they can get a flood of applicants and choose the best one. The third reson for a “confidential” posting might be for a scam, but this possibility is low. To put an ad in Yahoo costs money, so most are legit. Be very careful in giving out personal information. Just give out “cold” information, like your cell phone number only, so if they really are interested, they will contact you, and schedule an interview. But even if they call you, don’t give any info over the phone.
If you already sent out the application, there isin’t much you can do. I don’t think they can do much with that information anyway, they might be able to make some long-distance calls under your number, but this possibility is low. You can always call your cell company and tell them the situation, see what they suggest. Ask them to contact you if there is any suspicious activities/calls under your number. I really don’t think anything bad is going to happen, but if you want peace of mind, call your cell phone company’s customer service hotline and see what they say.
